Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about food, I just couldn’t shake a couple of these headlines and thought I’d take a few minutes to share them with those of you who didn’t have today off and therefore didn’t spend the morning on the couch with your laptop…
First, from the BBC:
Sometimes, people are stupid. Sometimes, really, really stupid. Sometimes, that person is a beauty queen. Apparently she went to Guantanamo as part of a goodwill trip to visit troops stationed around the world. Apparently, when she was writing in her blog about it later, she forgot that Guantanamo is a detention center where the US holds suspected terrorists and tortures them without charging them (not that that would make the torture ok), and wrote the following:

Yeah, she really said that. You know, if she’s serious about not wanting to leave, she could always plot or participate in a terrorist attack of some kind. Geesh.
Next, from Chicagoist:

Swarovski crystals on his tank top and everything, and we totally missed it. I don’t know what we were doing yesterday that was more important than sweatin’ to the oldies at Union Station. Dang. Note to self: get on that mailing list! No way we’re going to miss it next time! ;-)
And, finally, from the Chicago Examiner:
A review of the cafe where I work, one of 13 of its kind in Chicago. The review is favorable overall and accurate enough, if not a little over-dramatic (ha, I’m reviewing their review), and most important was the following line:

That’s right, young and hip. Write it down: Shana. Is. Hip.
So that’s really all you need to know about the world for right now. If anything else important ever comes up, you can count on us to let you know. Maybe.
Editor’s note: none of these stories are April Fool’s jokes. Not even the last one.

Chicago Thursday

A day late, perhaps, but not short on anything, and it almost makes having to go into work at 6:30 AM seem ok.

This is just a quick update to let you know that I’ve linked my blip.tv channel to our blog and that any new episodes I post over there will now show up here as well. Most of them are fairly dry technology tutorials created by yours truly. I don’t have much of anything there yet, but I will be posting a lot of videos in the weeks to come–mostly for my colleagues, but also for general viewing.
In part, this is an attempt to justify my recent purchase of some high-end screencasting software, but more so it’s my way of giving back a bit of what I’ve learned about web design, development and the internet. Anyway, I thought it’d be fun to have them cross-posted so that you all can see a bit more of what I’m up to.
Don’t let this little notice distract you though! Check out today’s Chicago Thursday post now!!!

biking
I know exactly how to dress for a bike ride when it’s 22 degrees out:

Yep, those are the heated pants. Flattering, hey? And snow boots, and my super fancy polartec hoodie from Patagonia, and my biking gloves, and a wind breaker. Perfect. On a 22 degree day, even with a bit of a breeze, when I’m dressed like this I hardly notice it’s winter. For real. If it’s a little warmer, I skip the heated pants and wear jeans with long johns underneath, and I don’t zip my windbreaker up all the way. If it’s a little cooler, I double up the gloves and the socks and crank the heated pants up to high.
But ’tis the one problem with warming temps (which I really, really am happy about otherwise, but): Between my two jobs today I’ve got 20 miles to cover, and it’s 42 degrees out. That’s significantly warmer than 22. I don’t have a clue what I should wear!

Wednesday Bites
Wednesdays posts are about food! Yay!
We both love food. Who doesn’t? We both love eating, we both love cooking. And we both have lots and lots to share on the subject. Furthermore, we live in a great big city with not only lots of food options, but lots of really really fantastic food options. Within a few blocks of our house, we have our pick of delicious Korean fried chicken, fancy fresh pizzas, and a long list of different flavored margaritas, not to mention the numerous cafes, ice cream shops, and of course, the fancy cheeses place. Ooh, I just saw on their website they have classes. I could go on and on! I haven’t even touched on our brunch options!
But there are lots of Wednesdays ahead, so there’s no need for me to ramble on like this. We’ll be taking turns talking about restaurants, recipes, and the latest taste sensations (mmhmm, I’ve said it before, we’re cutting edge) as they relate to our lives here in Chicago.
All of that said, and now that you’re all excited, I’ve had a cold for the last few days and I think pretty much all I’ve consumed has been frosted mini wheats (aldi brand, of course) and, most of all, red tea. Or at least that’s all I can think of. Bummer.
So that’s going to be it for me today: red tea. Lucky for me, it’s delicious, because, on the orders of my supervisor at the cafe, I drank almost a hundred ounces of it at work last night in a variety of forms: hot red tea, iced red tea, red tea latte, red tea latte with vanilla, with caramel, with soy milk, iced soy red tea latte with sugar free vanilla, easy on the ice… almost 100 ounces. That’s a lot.
They’re starting to say that red tea has as many health benefits as green tea when it comes to antioxidents and lowering cholesterol and generally making you healthier, which I think is nice because I like red tea better. I did make it through my closing shift last night, if that’s any testament to red tea’s ability to keep a fever down and a person up. But I tell you what, after 100 ounces, I don’t mind that we’re out of red tea and I’ve been drinking other things. I also don’t mind not having to close tonight. Sheesh, Wednesday really does bite when you’re sick. But don’t worry, I’ll bolster up my strength and get to feeling better and post a super awesome foodie post next week. It’ll probably be about lentils. Get excited.
PS, my back is sore and I think it’s because I’ve been blowing my nose so much. Is that weird?
PPS, Mac made me dinner, some delicious sweet potatoes and Asian sesame salad with oranges and chicken. He’s the best. Who needs to eat out when you can eat on the couch? :)
