It’s done.

(Well, mostly).

We designed them. We dug through all the papers and bought the ones that looked best. We laid everything out, we printed them, we cut them. We stamped them with pretty blue flower stamps. We addressed the return envelopes. We addressed the envelopes. We put stamps on everything. We stuffed them all with everything – the invite, the card with info about the reception, hotels, and a map, and the response card with envelope. Then we sealed them shut. Last of all, we put a pretty gold sticker on the back, because we didn’t trust the glue to hold, and dammit, we worked too hard on these things to have them come all afluttering apart in the mail.

Then we walked them to the post office and dropped them off.

We’re done.

Wedding invitations, done.

We were up visiting my parents today, and I was talking to my mom, over fresh homemade rhubarb muffins, about how we didn’t really trust the glue and had to get the pretty gold stickers to make sure the envelopes stayed shut.

“You be careful,” she said, “remember what happened to George!”

It was George Costanza’s wife-to-be, Susan, to whom things happened, of course. I assured my mom that we used a sponge to wet the envelopes and didn’t lick them,

didn’t poison ourselves, and didn’t die. Thank god for Seinfeld, hey? Could’ve been a close call!

You guys.

I said there were a lot of pictures.

(I said it to someone, might not have been you.)

Well.

There are a lot of pictures… though none of them are satisfying my craving for another bite of that wedding cake…

Megan Woods is a wedding cake goddess. Write it down. Goddess.

I tried uploading all the pictures here, to the blog, and it was just too many, too much… and your page would’ve taken forever to load, longer than usual, even. And I would’ve been so stressed by the process that I wouldn’t have had the mental energy for clever comments. We can’t have that! So instead, I threw the pictures on facebook, where it’s easier and where I’d also wanted to put them anyway. And you don’t have to be on facebook to see them, you can just click here: Megan Makes Wedding Cake

You know, there are a lot of decisions to make when you’re getting married, even if it’s just a big old family wedding and you don’t care about swarovski crystals or chair dresses that were shipped in from somewhere fancy to coordinate with your napkins. This was an easy one. Mac and I are trying to stay on top of everything else, and we’re doing pretty well… no, we haven’t registered anywhere, we haven’t reserved a block of rooms at a hotel for our out of town guests, and we haven’t looked at wedding rings… we’ll get on that… next week, I think. In all of this, it feels really good to know that our cake is in such good hands.

Think about how great a wedding cake is. Now think about how even much more great it becomes when it’s made by one of your best friends. What makes Megan a wedding cake goddess is not only her culinary genius, but her happiness at opening up her home and her kitchen while she spends seven hours making cake… for five. Next step: cake for 175. We’ll have to dig up a few more pans… and maybe a few more hours…

Shout out to Jill, who was also there to “help” (see photos) and generally share the love, and to Alex, this guy we just met. He’s a friend of Megan’s so he’s a friends of ours. Mostly, a big bravo to Megan, and a big, big thanks. Can’t wait for August.

Firmly now within the 6 months-to-go mark, Mac and I decided to sit down yesterday and sketch out where we’re at in the planning process:

Shana's sketch

As you can see, we’ve got a nice big area outdoors with a hill and a sunset and picnic tables and a playground. The guitar represents where the band will go, and the two concentric circles just above the “lodge” area represent a frisbee. One of my buddies at work yesterday suggested that if we can get Parks and Rec to let us have a bonfire (not likely at all but would be SO awesome!) we should give out s’more kits as favors. Whoa.

Mac made a sketch as well:

Mac's sketch

His sketch is similar to mine, except that there are more guitars, and also, his is actually a drawing of an alien. Helpful in its own way, of course, but if there are aliens on the guest list, we need to get their addresses for the invites and let the caterers know…
